Of course!! Engaging with y'all and the outer world is one of my favorite activities. I'm just glad I figured out a way to do it more now :)

(Isn’t it silly that important news and information are often paywalled while thousands of creators mine sensitive parts of their personal lives for free? Don’t you find that a bit dystopic?)

Yeah, idk why I have to pay for the New York Times when everyone else is sharing their experiences all the time online. Especially when it comes to international events that impact millions of people. That’s what happens when conglomerates control mainstream media outlets though. It’s definitely technocratic and oligarchic if anything.

Placing sensitive parts about oneself online is hard too, because there’s always that sneaking fear of “what if an employer sees this?”

That’s always something that weights on every creators mind who isn’t financially independent. After all, dependency is the most effective way to control individuals, communities, and large populations in general.

The higher you climb, the less dystopic things get. Until you finally reach Elysium.

I partly agree except I'm finding that more and more creators who aren't financially independent still post things without caring about future employers! It's an interesting shift in employer-employee relations that I haven't fully unpacked yet

Hmmm, we’ll I guess to a degree, they’re going all in on their content (whether they know it or not) if they don’t care about future job prospects. Or perhaps I’m wrong, and most employers don’t care about what they’re associates are posting online nowadays.

After all, the internet is huge and expending resources to dig into every single job applicants social life online, could be time consuming and costly for an organization.

How would you recommend folks promote their Substack / get the word out there without a youtube / video-based platform?

It can be really tough! I think there are two options: (1) try to leverage algorithm-based platforms that can allow for text-first, like Instagram carousels/infographics or the TikTok carousel posts or X (formerly Twitter) or LinkedIn or similar; (2) network with writers with similar target audiences and see if there are sensible opportunities to guest post or cross-post. The central question is how can you identify and exploit a network effect, whatever that "network" is. You could even go back to basics and get really into SEO hacking, which is honestly the original network effect that all blogs had to try and game. I'm no expert, though, so take all of the above with a grain of salt--I would be nowhere if it weren't for the video platform algorithms
