Thank you for sharing!! Super relate to this & your journey (pursuing creativity post Stanford, IBD)…I also wanted to give my parents a Vietnamese Catholic wedding, but it still fell short of expectations.

It's so jarring when you try so hard to fulfill roles (wedding, school, career choice, etc.) and STILL feel like you fall short, isn't it? I hope you were able to have moments of the ceremony which felt right for *you* and your partner--and know that you are exactly where you need to be right now 🩷

Thank you for sharing your experiences, Cece. I'm proud of you for being so vulnerable. Writing about these personal issues can't be easy, but hopefully it feels liberating too.

Thank you, Anna--it does feel liberating! Truly a reminder of why we write, no?

Hi Cece, thank you so much for sharing your experience. I’m 24 and still figuring out how I feel about the structures of marriage. I often feel saddened and anxious at the thought that marriage might mean having less space to commit to friendships or “familyships,” especially when work and life pull people away from those bonds. I feel really seen by what you wrote. I don’t see a clear alternative to marriage in today’s world that still allows you to fully participate in society, and I’m curious if you’ve thought about that and what your take might be. Thanks!

I read this and thought hold on did we have the exact same Chinese wedding experience. The pale makeup splashed on is so painful as women raised in western society but held to eastern beauty standards. I'm glad I'm not alone but sorry you had to go through that, and I hope you love the Hermes.

Hello Cece, I appreciate hearing your refreshing takes on marriage, having children, and cultural norms/societal expectations. I'm sorry your Chinese wedding had you acting in a performative manner; that would be frustrating to me as well.

It's a concern I have right now, thinking about my future wedding while dating someone from a culture that places great emphasis on filial piety, performative efforts, and so on.

I hope you and your partner were able to take time to celebrate with friends, to share your love, and to feel their love.
